Woman Knifed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The victim, aged 34 years, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the attack.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the victim's passing charges were upgraded to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities stated police personnel will remain around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the accused, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside Bullring retail complex, opposite primary access point of New Street railway station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand why it happened.
Eyewitness Reports
An area worker, who works nearby, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many co-workers take public transport, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It causes concern about my partner," he said.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... and to think a totally random act [happened], understandably, it's horrible."
