Windy City TV Reporter's Arrest in ICE Raid Called 'Alarming and Terrifying', Lawyers State

Legal representatives acting for a journalist from the city of Chicago's local TV network who was briefly held by federal agents last week describe the event as "an occurrence that ought to concern and frighten each individual in this nation".

Particulars of the Detainment

Debbie Brockman, a US citizen and station staff member, was taken into custody on the weekend by government officers during an ICE operation in a North Side Chicago area. Videos from the scene show the producer being pushed down by officers before she is handcuffed and put in a vehicle.

At the moment, a homeland security official stated that the individual "threw objects at an official vehicle" and was "detained for attacking an officer".

Later on Friday, the television station confirmed that their employee had been released from federal custody and that no charges had been pressed against her.

Attorney's Response

In a news release released by attorneys acting for the journalist on Tuesday, her representatives disputed the official version. They declared they "strongly refute any claim that she attacked anyone" and that "She was the one who was violently assaulted by federal agents on her way to work" on the date in question.

Her attorneys explain that at the moment of the arrest, Brockman was "not acting in any professional capacity as an employee for the station" but that she was just "walking to the transit point as part of her daily travel when she was confronted by federal officers.

"The individual, who is a American citizen born in this country, was violently detained on a city street," the statement continues. "As this happened, bystanders on the street began filming the incident and inquired her her name."

The statement indicates that she informed the onlookers her name and that she worked at the station, in the hopes that "someone would notify her employer so colleagues would know that she would not be coming at work that day", her attorneys stated.

Consequences and Legal Action

According to her legal team, Brockman was kept in government detention for about several hours before being released.

"She has not been charged with any crimes and she plans to explore all legal options available to her to vindicate her rights and ensure government accountability for their actions," the statement adds.

"Brad Thomson, a legal representative, added in the release: "When armed, masked, government officers are taking American nationals off the street as they walk to work and throwing them in unmarked vehicles, you can only imagine what these officers must be willing to do to our foreign-born residents and individuals who choose to protest against them."
"The journalist was taken to the ground, battered, handcuffed, and her pants were pulled down exposing her uncovered skin," Thomson stated. "Not anyone should be handled like that in this metropolis, in this country or anywhere else in the globe."

Immigration authorities, the Department of Homeland Security, and the US Customs and Border Protection did not provide a prompt reply to requests for comment from news outlets.
