In the latest top-flight news, a significant midfielder has been issued a significant suspension, a manager has pointed out a player's errors to make an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive improvements following an erratic victory.
Mejbri Given Four-Match Ban and Financial Penalty
Burnley's player Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-game ban and a financial fine following improper behaviour in October's match against Leeds United. The governing body confirmed the player was referred an independent disciplinary panel following an incident where he spat towards visiting supporters around the 67-minute mark of a 2-0 victory by Burnley.
An FA statement explained: “An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during their top-flight game against Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that he acted against the laws of football or in an improper way and/or engaging in abusive and/or indecent behaviour through spitting towards the area of Leeds United fans.”
It added, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-game ban and £15,000 after proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for the sanction will be published in due course.” The team, currently 19th in the Premier League standings, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.
Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Make an Argument
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that not having experience is no an issue for his club, highlighting how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not stop the 28-year-old from having poorly in a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful squad in the Premier League, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in their setback. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, the most experienced player on the pitch, after he produced a mistake-riddled performance in central defence.
“We always talk about experience when we drop points,” Maresca said. “After we beat Barcelona, we drew with Arsenal, nobody was talking about experienced personnel. I know that when we don’t win, we are always searching for an explanation, but I think the reason why we lost to Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we were not good enough.”
Maresca continued, “Who is the most senior player on our team in the match? Who was? Did he play any good? So, it’s not about experience. It's that those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
3. Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Must Get Better'
The Manchester City manager has stated his team have taken lessons from a recent thriller against Fulham with the game is now forgotten. City survived for a 5-4 victory in a remarkable encounter at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with about an hour gone.
This followed they fought off a fightback and won 3-2 in the prior game, it raised further doubts about if City possess resilient required to mount a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable lessons, I hope. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, one must learn from what happens in the good things and bad things and think of what's next.”
“Of course I am worried,” Guardiola added. “We try to analyse the cause, to not concede the goals. After conceding three against Leeds, and five goals against Fulham you can see our versions, correct? Therefore, we have done many good things. But the number of shots on target had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. It’s not bad. How many shots on target did Fulham ? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded is too high. We have to be better.”
4. Newcastle Prioritise on Defenders' Deals
The Magpies' recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made new deal discussions with key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda at St James’ Park. He arrived from Nottingham Forest in October and is pleased that midfielder Sandro Tonali has a contract extending until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
This allows Wilson free to prioritise talks with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's talks have assumed some importance.
“The initial three or four days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s deal was significantly more secure than I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that we would want to extend Tino’s contract and we would want to renew Sven Botman’s too. These talks are ongoing.”
Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the home game with Burnley on Saturday, with the defender expected to remain sidelined for at least another week.
