{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the governing body
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were informed and made ready to enter the track and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred after that point"
